Position Description

The Director of Student Health at UAA is a key decision-maker in the operation and strategic direction of a comprehensive college physical health program. This includes the administrative supervision of the physical healthcare professionals in the University’s Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC). Further, the position provides clinical services to students while maintaining responsibility for effective upkeep of day-to-day operations including scheduling and billing. The position collaborates across campus units to develop effective strategies to create and maintain healthy environments through prevention of and intervention in physical health issues. The Director also works in collaboration with the Dean of Students and the Director of Counseling to develop institutional policies, procedures, and guidelines that inform the University’s response to individual health needs as well as events that impact student health on campus. Specific skills that will be important for the Director will include a focus on the coordination and provision of direct client services, engagement in data-informed decision making, knowledge of current trends in college physical healthcare services. The Director will be called upon to regularly inform university leadership on health issues that impact UAA students and the services that are necessary to support the UAA community.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

The Director of Student Health will work in close collaboration with the other Directors within the sphere of the Dean of Student Office (Counseling, Disability Support Services, Student Conduct, Multicultural Affairs, Native Student Services, CARE Team, and Residence Life). The Director has primary responsibility for leadership of all aspects of the physical health services provided at the Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC). Specific areas of responsibility include oversight and guidance of the physical health program and demonstrated ability to provide the following:

  • Ability to treat and assess complex physical health cases.
  • Clinical laboratory skills, including management of hazardous waste, laboratory procedures and management.
  • Knowledge of appropriate medical/legal documentation.
  • Presentation, public speaking and teaching skills.
  • Knowledge and interpretation of a wide variety of health care related regulations: professional, state, and federal guidelines and/or mandates relating to health care and the confidentiality of records. Professional, ethical and legal codes of conduct. 
  • Skills in fiscal planning, budget management, goal setting and decision making).
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with health professional staff, including ability to supervise and lead a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of community health issues, including communicable disease surveillance, prevention and outbreak management and disaster preparedness.
  • Ability to lead employees and create plans related to specialized area of expertise.
  • Expert knowledge of general medicine.
  • Ability to actively participate in long range strategic planning for a university unit and division.
  • Ability to design, implement, assess and administer programs to support student needs in a higher education environment.
  • Ability to actively participate in long range strategic planning for a university unit and division.Experience working with diverse populations of students, parents, staff and university community members.
  • Experience in organizational leadership, personnel management, decision-making, and conflict management. 
  • Experience in assessment of student services activities and proven knowledge of the use of information to improve functions, services, and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform and lead in a team environment, build consensus, and lead organizational change. 
  • Commitment to student-centered approach to healthcare.

Required Experience:

  • Significant experience providing physical healthcare.
  • Experience in a supervisory position at a medical facility. 
  • Experience with fiscal management of a medical facility.
  • The ability to function independently with minimum supervision.
  • Significant experience in progressively responsible positions in the medical care field. 
  • Ability to work with traditional and non-traditional students in a diverse environment with a demonstrated record of service to diverse populations including active-duty and veteran students. 

Typical Education or Training:

Candidates must possess a M.D.; D.O.; M.S.N.; or D.N.P., as well as a minimum of 7-10 years clinical experience in an ambulatory care clinic or similar practice, urgent care, or private practice as well as minimum of 5 years administrative experience including the supervision of healthcare providers. Candidates must also possess a current federal controlled substance registration (DEA Certificate) and BLS certification or the ability to become BLS certified within 180 days of hire. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in a higher education setting.

Position Information:

  • Grade 83, Regular, Exempt, Full-time, 12 months per year
