Position:    Advanced Oncology Nurse Practitioner (please note, if this position is not for you, many other NP/traveler opportunities available! 

Location:   Anchorage, AK 

Pay Range: DOE

Our client is seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner to work within a collaborative model, providing high quality care to improve patient outcomes by strengthening care continuity in all settings. The range of responsibilities is clinical and educational and will include, but not be limited to:

  • Performs and documents comprehensive medical and psychosocial health histories and examinations.
  • Gathers data, conducts history and physical exam, and formulated and implements treatment plans in collaboration with the physician.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic studies related to the patient’s plan of care and response to treatment.
  • Provides follow-up care on and outpatient and inpatient basis.
  • Initiates consultation with specialists as indicated.
  • Recognizes oncology related problems and initiates interventions.
  • Identifies treatment-related toxicities and initiates interventions.
  • Demonstrates expertise in symptom management.
  • Monitors and adjusts patient medications and treatments according to established guidelines.
  • Diagnoses and treats common oncology associated illnesses.
  • Manages telephone calls related to emergency situations, symptom management, psychosocial, and family concerns.
  • Provides continuity of care across settings (home, home health, skilled nursing, hospice, and oncology rehabilitation).
  • Supervises chemotherapy in the office setting.
  • Collaborates with the physician and chemotherapy infusion nurse to schedule chemotherapy.
  • Approves chemotherapy orders based on established guidelines (NCCN, CTCAE).
  • Provides psychosocial counseling and support to patients and families.
  • Makes referrals as necessary.
  • Performs bone marrow biopsies.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of integrative therapies and their use in complementing medical treatment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of cancer risk factors, disease processes, and treatment options.
  • Evaluates patient intervention outcomes.
  • Coordinates discharge plans, follow up, home health, and outpatient prescriptions.
  • Assists with hospital rounds.

 Educational Responsibilities:

  • Provides information on disease, staging, treatment, health promotion, and disease prevention to patients and family.
  • Facilitates smooth transition from diagnosis to treatment by providing education (chemo teaching appointment) to the patient and the family, assuring all prerequisites to receiving treatment have been completed prior to administration.
  • Educates and obtains code status on all stage IV patients. Refers to palliative care.
  • Collaborates with protocol nurses and physicians to support and promote research

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: MSN or DNP
  • Licensure by the State of Alaska Board of Nursing as an RN and ANP
  • DEA required.
  • Demonstrated organization, facilitation, and communication skills.
