Simmons College to conduct our research study on the nurse practitioner's diagnosis and management of pediatric concussion
Concern about brain injury has initiated the formation of laws in all fifty states and the District of Columbia to require a licensed health professional to manage the return to play after a concussion of a school aged child. Some states, but not all, include the NP as a professional who can clear the school athlete to return to play. Effective management of concussion in children requires accurate and timely diagnosis. NPs in many settings are in a unique position to interact with these patients, their family or school. The purpose of the study is to see if there is a difference between nurse practitioners working in different environments on their diagnosis, management and use of guidelines for pediatric concussions. The survey questions were a combination of two previous research studies on pediatric concussions (Zemek, et al., 2014, Zonfrillo, et al., 2013) but adjusted toward nurse practitioners.
