I think there is a lot of information/input/suggestions that retired NPs can offer. They may also have more time to devote to the ANPA cause. I would be inclined to go with Option 2. Retired NPs would have the opportunity to vote, make motions, and hold office other than Pres. or Pres. elect. I feel that the Pres./Pres. Elect should be an active practicing NP in the community. I think if retired NPs are making the effort to stay involved in the NP cause, then they should be afforded the opportunity to impact/change/uphold current NP practice.

When you review the definition of 'retired' status in the various professions including Nursing, it appears that RETIRED status equates to NO longer holding a CURRENT license to practice in the respective profession. Whereas PART-time status generally confers holding a CURRENT license to practice in the profession, & practicing (compensated and/or uncompensated volunteer) 20 hrs or less per work week. I do not believe that RETIRED or PART-time status necessarily confers having less income at one's disposal than being employed (w/compensation) FULL-time. Therefore, I would ADD & define RETIRED status in the Bylaws, & award Option 2 privileges (vote, and hold office except that of President or President-Elect). The RETIRED status Membership dues need to be established w/Member input. The PART-time Membership status would confer Option 1 Full privileges (make motions, vote, and hold office(s)). The Membership dues for this status needs to be established w/Membership input. As stated, PART-time 'status' does not necessarily infer 'reduced' income. I believe that both RETIRED status & PART-time status Members should be definitely be "afforded the opportunity to impact/change/uphold current NP practice..." as per the stated viewpoint of K Fell, APRN-CNP/AANP State Rep. The Membership category of Associate could possibly be deleted, unless, there is benefit to offering this status to NON-nurses. Thanks to the Membership for soliciting my feedback regarding the ANPA Bylaw revision/update.

Though my first inclination would be to go with option 2 I also am thinking that perhaps option 1 might also be considered. I'd be interested in hearing why other members think full membership privileges to make motions, vote and hold office would be inadequate for a retired member? The presidency is no doubt an extremely time consuming position. Perhaps a retired member might have more time if not practicing and possibly without the family obligations s/he had at one time, to afford the time and commitment afforded this position? I'm not certain I completely agree or disagree with this option and would appreciate further discussion. I think retired members have a great deal to offer the association. Thank you.
